'Suggest him doing' 還是 'Suggest him to do'?

不少人都不太知道suggest後應配上動詞還是gerund，以及和that-clause一起使用時要注意的地方。這現象十分普遍，主要是因為此問題不能用一般分辨gerund和to-infinitive的方法來解答（參考告別中式英語—不可不知的英語文法）。

其實，若沒有使用that-clause，suggest一般會與gerund（動詞+ing）使用，例如：

I suggest going to the Japanese restaurant. （我建議去那一間日本餐廳。）

He suggested increasing the investment in machinery. （他建議增加在機器的投資。）

當然，suggest後還可配上名詞，例如：

I suggest that yellow backpack. （我提議那黃色的背包。）

The doctor suggested a medicine to the patient. （醫生向病人提議一種藥物。）

但是，如果我們要向某人建議做某種事情，便可能需要使用subjunctive mood。
